The East End Does Film: The Fade
This the last in HM Alex's EEFF 2013 reviews shines a light on a community great, the barber shop on The Fade.
One thing that is intrinsic to all generation of males is going to the Barber. The Fade looks at the Afro-Caribbean male’s relationship with their barber, and it’s a pleasurable insight into a very exclusive rite of passage world that is hardly ever explored (unless you go by Barbershop…the movie, which I didn’t). Globe hopping between three continents and four locations, Jamaica, New York, Ghana and London The Fade is a rare chance to delight in many cultures whilst kind of telling the same story. It’s funny, upbeat, poignant and all told from behind the shears (or blade in the case of the Ghanaian barber). Like the cities they reside in the attitudes to their craft is treated with equal pride and precision. It’s an age-old tradition and one of the few that cannot be replaced by machines. Having said that, we go beyond the four walls of their mirrored habitats - one barber finds himself at the mercy of his oldest clients as they vie for his custom amidst his well earned and continually demanding status as a celeb barber; we see the artistic endeavors of another that sees him holding exhibits in Germany; another barber is as good as his clientele profess, and we journey with him as he cuts the hair of very affluent musicians in Jamaica and lastly, we catch a glimpse of the happy-go-lucky life of another barber who has dreams of rapping and bares a more than uncanny resemblance to infamous rap artist TuPac Shakur. It’s a vibrant stunningly shot and put together film, but if you ladies think this gives anything away, you’ll be disappointed (maybe relieved) to see otherwise.
